I was able to pay my rent up until October 2020, but then my unemployment benefits were canceled, and there is still no way to talk to a real person who could explain what to do or how to do it. The complex where I live sent out red notices instead of the management office mailing them, and they placed the red rent delinquent letters outside of our apartment doors where anyone and everyone can see them and read them. I’ve been begging out on the streets of Chicago to get money for rent and food. Not to mention I have underlying health issues that could become terminal if I don’t get treated properly. I have no health insurance either. I’ve been out of work since March 11, 2020. I’m still trying to look around for work, but due to my underlying health issues, I would put myself at high risk of covid. I owe $2,700 in back rent plus $150 in late charges. I tried to talk to the management office, but they wouldn’t listen or help. Instead they told me that once the court opened back up, if I didn’t have the rent in full by then, that eviction will start immediately. I can barely feed myself. I go to pantries and try to catch fast food restaurants at closing time to get the food they throw out. I’m still in my apartment, barely making it. I keep my electricity on only because my heat is controlled by it. I try to at least pay what I can for my electricity. My phone is only on because it’s a government phone, and I get 500 free minutes a month.
